CREDIT REPORT GUIDE

Is credit monitoring worth paying for?

A decision guide for alerts, coverage and subscription costs.

A monitoring service alerts you to selected changes. It does not prevent every kind of fraud, repair inaccurate information, or replace a careful review of your reports and account statements.

Start with the free tools

Get your reports through the authorized free route. Consider a free credit freeze if preventing new-account fraud is your priority. Many banks and card issuers also provide alerts for activity on an existing account; check what you already have before adding a subscription.

Compare the actual plan

Look for which bureaus are monitored, what changes trigger alerts, delivery speed, identity restoration assistance, the full recurring price and cancellation steps. A plan advertising identity insurance may have exclusions; read its terms rather than assuming every loss will be covered.

Match the service to a specific need

A service may be useful if its alerts and support cover a gap in your current routine. Keep access to your own reports and a plan for responding when you receive an alert. See our comparison framework before signing up.

Takeaway

A paid subscription is optional. Your right to request a free report and dispute an error does not depend on buying one.
