CREDIT REPORT GUIDE

How long information stays on a report

Understand general reporting periods and when to challenge inaccurate dates.

Accurate information can remain on a report even when it is unfavorable. A credit repair service cannot simply make accurate negative entries disappear.

General time periods

The CFPB says negative account-payment information can generally be reported for up to seven years. Bankruptcy information may appear for up to ten years. Positive information may remain longer. The applicable period depends on the type of item and its dates.

Check the dates and status

Look at the original delinquency and account history when relevant, not just the date a collector bought a debt or an account was updated. If a reported date or status appears inaccurate, gather your records and dispute that specific entry.

What to avoid

Be skeptical of a guaranteed deletion date or a claim that paying someone will erase accurate negative information. Use official reporting-company instructions and keep copies of your correspondence.
