CREDIT REPORT GUIDE

Beyond the three credit bureaus

Learn when a specialty consumer report may matter.

The three nationwide credit bureaus are not the only consumer reporting companies. Specialty companies may collect information related to tenant screening, insurance, checking accounts, employment or other decisions.

Identify the company involved

If you receive a notice about an application, look for the reporting company that supplied the information. The CFPB maintains a searchable company list ↗ with request and dispute information.

Ask for your file

Follow the company’s instructions to request your report. A specialty report may have information the three nationwide reports do not show. Review entries in the context of the specific decision and dispute inaccurate or incomplete information with the company and the source of the information, when appropriate.

Keep a private record

Save the company name, date of the request and any response. Do not upload a specialty report to this site; we do not collect consumer files.
